Library is only one place in today's society where everyone can be free of charge and without any requirement for performance. Everybody is simply welcome! Therefore, the library has become a meeting place for different ages and different groups of society.
While we have in Sweden the library law and in § 8 is written Public and school libraries should pay special attention to people with disabilities, immigrants and other minorities by offering literature in other languages than Swedish and in forms adapted to their needs.
Surveys show that most lent languages after Swedish are Thai and Russian and borrowers are women who come to libraries to borrow books and leave. They do not stay long at the library. Contrast, men with origin in Middle East and the Balkans gladly stay longer at the library, they come in the morning to read newspapers from their countries of origin and then talk to each other, playing chess, etc. Meanwhile, the average librarian in a Swedish library is a Swedish-born woman of a higher middle age.

Regional Library Office of Västra Götaland tried to do something about it. First attempt was Project Library hosts which ran between 2006 and 2008 and involved 12 new employees with non-Nordic background in 8 public libraries in the region.
Another attempt is the language consultations. The objective is the improvement and renewal of the median stock in question for each community languages.

The work and activities are built on cooperation and networking on many different levels. Playtherapist Victoria Klaiber and librarian Karin Graube present how this particular cultural centre is working.

11.00 The Red Ribbon and the Colour Yellow
In April 2008 we opened a new main library in Hjørring, Denmark. This library is created by the artist duo Bosch & Fjord. The heart and pivotal point of the new library is a physical communication structure that twists and winds its way through the library. We call it the red ribbon. Focus in this presentation will be on the children´s department with its possibilities for play and creativity.
