SVENSK BIBLIOTEKSFÖRENING

Joint search in Norwegian libraries. A web-based search service supporting cross-library circulation. Project status and plans.

Oddrun Pauline Ohren, Senior adviser at Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority.

In this project the National Library of Norway and Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority collaborate on developing Biblioteksøk (Librarysearch) - a search and lending service covering holdings in Norwegian libraries.

Our goal is for Biblioteksøk to constitute a cornerstone in a future seamless library network referred to as the Norwegian Nationwide Library. When deployed, Biblioteksøk will also replace the existing Union Catalogue. While the target group of Biblioteksøk is best described as the general public, we also see it as a useful tool for librarians, particularly in the context of reference work.

An overall project plan is outlined, partitioning the project into three phases: i) Planning and specification ii) Pilot version iii) First field version. The first phase, including detailed plans and specifications for the Pilot version was completed July 1st 2008, according to which the Pilot version will be up and running by mid-2009. Although offering limited functionality and covering only a good handful of libraries, the Pilot version will be comprehensively evaluated and thereby form the main basis for detailed planning of the field system development.

This talk will outline status and plans for the project, including functional requirements and overall architectural principles. Specific challenges will be discussed, including issues like funding, project organisation and user/library involvement.
