Barriers to Open Access

Mathias Klang, Gothenburg University, Sweden

It is well known among university librarians that one of the barriers to enabling open access is copyright. But what does this mean in reality?
This talk will present the results of an ongoing study aimed at determining the contents, real and perceived, of the copyright barrier to open access. The empirical data that forms the foundation for this study is mainly the results of interviews, focusing on the topic of copyright and open access, carried out with representatives of Swedish university libraries. The purpose of this study is to obtain a more nuanced understanding of the copyright barriers to the development of open access at Swedish universities.
