Welcome to Stockholm
and to the IFLA Satellite Conference:

The Multicultural Library: Staff Competence for Success

10-12th of August 2005, in Stockholm, Sweden

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Stockholm, the beautiful Swedish capital on-the-water is a delightful summer city with its open views, green parks, bridges over glittering water, filled with white tour boats heading for the nearby archipelago, and the fresh Nordic light above it all. It’s also a city for museum passionates, music lovers, shopping enthusiasts, island hoppers, architecture fans – and almost everybody else!

In this setting the conference, The Multicultural Library: Staff Competence for Success, will begin on the evening of your arrival, with a visit to the Nobel Library of the Swedish Academy, where the famous Nobel Prize laureates are appointed each year. From there we will continue to the Nobel Museum located in the same building, beeing the former stock market house situated in the medieval core of the city, the Old Town.

A multicultural city, Stockholm’s suburban surroundings are filled with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. The conference includes excursions within the programme, aiming to highlight libraries that are interplaying with their multicultural surroundings, trying to meet their challenges in different ways.

There will also be an opportunity to get aquainted with the International Library of Stockholm, whose activities combine the role of national interlending centre with that of open visitors’ library. This is the only full scale institution in Sweden of its kind. More than 100 languages are represented in its collection and 27 languages are spoken by the staff.

But, most importantly we hope that the conference speakers will inspire you to attend. We have a fascinating mix of presenters coming from different parts of the world and representing a variety of perspectives. The presentations will lay a solid groundwork for discussions about - and commitment in - the future of the Multicultural Library.

Do not delay, register now! The early bird deadline for registration is the 1st of June. Be sure to check our home page for updates leading up to the conference.

A warm welcome to Stockholm, we hope to see you in August!

Our kindest regards

The Organizing Committee
